CHANGING JOBS

Check your work coverage before your job changes.

A new job, retirement, or a move into self-employment is a good time to get clear dates and written answers.

Find the coverage you have now

Ask HR or your benefits administrator for the life insurance benefit summary and the insurer’s contact details. Separate employer-provided coverage from any individual policy you own.

Do not assume an old plan lasts until a new employer’s plan begins. Ask both benefits teams to explain any gap and the dates that apply.

Get answers to these five questions

  • What exact date does my current coverage end or change?
  • Can I continue or convert any coverage, and what do those options mean?
  • What forms and deadlines apply to my plan?
  • What would the new premium and benefits be?
  • When would coverage from the next job actually start?

Check options promptly

Some policies offer continuation or conversion options, but availability, deadlines, benefits, and prices depend on the plan and applicable rules. Get the insurer’s instructions promptly and keep a copy.

Do not rely on one general deadline found online. Ask what applies to your own coverage and circumstances.

Put personal coverage in the picture

Use the policy checkup to list what you already have and what needs clarification. If you are comparing individual coverage, ask about the insurer’s application and when coverage would take effect.

Discuss existing benefits before replacing a policy. Confirm replacement coverage is effective before ending old coverage. Timmy can help you prepare questions; submitting a website form does not start or extend insurance.
