You are building something that matters. Let’s look at the people who depend on you, the obligations you are taking on, and coverage that fits the business you are building.
Start by separating household needs from business needs. A personal life insurance policy can help the family beneficiaries named in it after a covered death. A business-owned policy may pay the business instead.
Keep the purpose, owner, insured person, and beneficiary clear for each policy. Money intended for the business should not automatically be counted again as support for your household.
A key-person policy may help a company after the death of someone essential to it. Insurance may also play a role in an ownership buy-sell plan. These arrangements need coordination with qualified legal and tax advisers.
IUL may be worth exploring when you want permanent life insurance with cash value and can support its ongoing funding needs. It is one option to evaluate alongside your budget and other coverage.
PERMANENT COVERAGE
Indexed universal life (IUL)
IUL combines a death benefit with cash value that may receive interest credits using an index-linked formula. You are not directly investing in the index.
Crediting limits and policy charges affect results.
Illustrated growth is not a promise.
Funding needs require ongoing attention; insufficient value and payments can cause lapse.
Loans and withdrawals can reduce benefits and cash value.
Term provides a death benefit during a selected period. It can be worth comparing for responsibilities with an end date, such as years of family income support or a temporary obligation.
Usually has no cash value.
Often has a lower initial premium than permanent coverage for the same death benefit.
Coverage length, future premiums, and any renewal or conversion rights matter.
New business income can change from month to month. Compare the payment with the money available after business costs and household bills. A funding plan needs to work beyond an optimistic sales forecast.
Three questions to ask about an IUL illustration
Which figures are guaranteed, and which are projections?
What happens if interest credits are lower than shown?
What payments might be needed to keep coverage in force?
An interest-crediting floor does not stop insurance costs and charges from reducing cash value. Review the policy regularly if you choose it.
Is IUL the best life insurance for every business owner?
No single type fits every owner. IUL may suit some permanent protection and cash-value goals, but its costs, crediting limits, and funding requirements matter. Compare it with term and other available options based on your needs and a premium you can maintain.
Can I use one policy for my family and my business?
The answer depends on ownership, beneficiaries, and any business agreements. A policy payable to the business may not provide money directly to your family. Discuss each purpose separately and involve qualified advisers for business arrangements.
Can an IUL policy fund my business right away?
Do not assume so. Cash value takes time to build, and access may involve loans, interest, charges, reduced benefits, and possible tax consequences. Ask for actual guaranteed and non-guaranteed values; do not treat projected cash value as available startup money.
Does life insurance cover business losses or disability?
A standard life insurance death benefit does not automatically cover lost sales, business interruption, job loss, or disability. Those needs involve different coverage or specific additional benefits. Confirm what is actually included.
